7 Reasons to See Australia in Winter

In winter, Australia has the most diverse attractions and ways for you to enjoy all that she has to offer. From beach bumming to skiing and snowboarding, you can do it all Down Under during the ‘cold’ season.

1. The beaches are still open!

In Northern Queensland winter time sees temperatures dropping, but not by that much. During this time of year, the humidity is low; there are refreshing breezes and plenty of sunshine. It’s the perfect time to take a dip in the sea at a pleasant temp of between 23°C to 29°C. And if you’re in Bondi Beach, get in some winter fun with a skate round the only beachside ice rink in Australia!

2. And so are the ski fields.

Head down south to Victoria where you’ll find hundreds of ski-runs across ten alpine locations. From the famed Mt Buller just an easy 3-hour drive from Melbourne, to the boutique slopes of Mt Buffalo and more challenging cross-country trails of Mt Stirling, there are plenty of locations to get some skiing and snowboarding in for everyone. If you’re not a skier, don’t fret. You can still enjoy the snow-capped mountains and scenic views trekking in snow-shoes, as well as tobogganing and tubing down the powdery slopes.

3. It’s the best time to see specific sites and destinations.

With the cooler climate and temps hovering at 20°C to 22°C, the Australian Outback and iconic sites such as the mystical rock formation Uluru would be more pleasant to experience and enjoy during winter.

4. Christmas in July!

Since the seasons are all backwards in Australia, Christmas in December is usually hot, sunny and devoid of any snow. From June to August, Australians flock to the Blue Mountains for Yulefest to experience a cold and snow filled Christmas with all the trimmings – roast turkey dinners with cranberry sauce, roaring fires and carolling.

5. It’s whale watching season.

From May to November, it’s the perfect time for whale watching as they make their annual migration from both the west and east coasts of Australia from Antarctica. This is the season when you can easily spot these majestic mammals from various scenic spots along Australia’s coastline from the warm waters of Victoria’s Warrnambool to Tasmania’s picture-perfect Great Oyster Bay.

6. The mesmerising Southern Lights.

Bet you haven’t even heard of the Southern Lights. The Northern Lights may get all the attention but Australia has a natural light show which is just as wondrous and stunning. The Southern Lights are elusive and sightings may be rare but make your way to Tasmania in September which is usually the best time to catch one of the world’s most magnificent spectacles.

7. Great festivals for everyone.

Just because it’s winter it doesn’t mean the Aussies crawl into their homes to hibernate. Quite the opposite. During the winter season, most major Australian cities are a hive of activity with all sorts of festivals. The Winter Festival featuring open-air ice-skating, exhilarating rides and captivating entertainment for the whole family is held in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Fremantle. Splendour in the Grass, Australia’s biggest winter music festival, attracts festival lovers not only from just Australia but from around the world. And for movie buffs, ‘tis the season to catch independent and internationally acclaimed movies in Sydney and Melbourne as winter is when both these cities hold their annual Film Festivals.
