Walter’s global journey takes him to some of the most remote places on earth which include Greenland, Iceland and the snow-capped mountains of Afghanistan. Gil is a successful but distracted Hollywood screenwriter holidaying in Paris with his fiancée Inez and her parents. He mysteriously gets transported back to the 1920’s, the Golden Age in his opinion, every night at midnight where he meets some of the greatest and most influential writers and artists of the time such as Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Salvador Dali.

Based on the memoirs of American author Frances Mayes, this movie tells the life-changing story of how Mayes devastated by her husband’s infidelity and impending divorce, impulsively purchases and restores a crumbling old Villa in Tuscany. Through the process of restoring her new home, she eventually finds the fulfilment she was searching for.

4. Eat, Pray, Love (2010) - Italy, India, Bali

An autobiographical movie based on the memoirs of American journalist, Elizabeth Gilbert, who is unhappily married and spirals into a deep depression, and then realizes she needs to embark on a journey of self-discovery to search for the three things she is missing in life: pleasure, devotion and balance.

She first travels to Italy to learn Italian and to ‘Eat’ in order to regain the 25 pounds she lost during her depression, followed by a trip to India to ‘Pray’ in an ashram and find inner peace and lastly to Bali where she unexpectedly finds ‘Love’.

5. Couples Retreat (2009) - Bora Bora

Jason and Cynthia, Dave and Ronnie, Joey and Lucy, and the recently divorced Shane with his new young girlfriend, go on a couples retreat at a tropical-island resort in Bora Bora, French Polynesia so that Jason and Cynthia can work on their failing marriage. Unbeknownst to the rest, the resort’s therapy sessions are not optional. As the other three couples go through the motions of the sessions, fault lines start to appear in their own relationships.

This charming British romantic comedy tells the story of unlucky-in-love Katie, who is hired to be a decoy bride to throw the paparazzi off the scent of the real bride, a famous Hollywood actress trying to marry her British fiancé. Katie in “disguise” accidentally marries the groom instead!

7. The Beach (2000) - Maya Bay, Thailand

Based on Alex Garland’s debut novel of the same name, the movie centres around Richard, a typical American backpacker in Bangkok, Thailand who finds himself in possession of a strange map. It is a map that purportedly leads to a legendary island paradise where a community of backpackers have settled, living off the land and sea. Excited and intrigued, he sets out in search for the fabled beach.

A year after their father’s funeral, three brothers take a train trip through India in search of their mother who relocated to the foothills of the Himalayas years before.

With Barcelona included in the title, it is no wonder that Barcelona herself plays an integral role in the making of this romantic drama by Woody Allen. Every scene in the movie is visually stunning and features Barcelona’s many cultural monuments and buildings such as the Joan Miró Foundation, the Catalonia National Museum of Art and Barcelona Airport with its mural by Miró. The other two cities featured in the movie are Oviedo which Allen himself describes as “fairy-tale like” and Avilés where some of the most romantic scenes between Vicky and Juan were shot. 10. The Bucket List - Everywhere

Carter, blue-collar mechanics, and Edward, a four-times-divorced healthcare tycoon, are two men who meet each other for the first time in the same hospital where they’re both diagnosed with terminal cancer. Carter starts writing a bucket list of all the things he would like to do before he finally kicks the bucket. Upon hearing he only has one more year to live, he abandons his list. But Edward finds it and encourages Carter to fulfil his list including financing the trip.

The odd pair go off on an international “road trip” to fulfil Carter’s bucket list which takes them to the ancient Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, on lion safari in Africa, trekking Mount Everest, and careening along the Great Wall of China on a motorcycle amongst other adventures.
